'AER Lingus is effectively up for sale, just as the Irish government flags selling its stake and British Airways eyes probable targets.

Industry insiders said that the loss-making Aer Lingus had held informal talks with a number of rival carriers and told them that the Irish Government would sell its shares if a partner were found.

Christoph Mueller, chief executive, appeared to confirm this overnight in an interview with Aviation Week. He said he would be interested in selling a stake to a larger airline, citing the example of Lufthansa's purchase of 45 per cent of Brussels Airlines two years ago.'
