Lisbon - A passenger jet, suspected to be from Angola, lost metal parts over a Lisbon suburb on Monday damaging a car and the roof of a building, firefighters said.
No one was hurt in the incident in the town of Almada south of the Portuguese capital which happened around 11:45 GMT, Vitor Espirito Santo, commander of Almada firefighters, told AFP.
"We found metal parts about 5 cm by 10cm in several places in Almada" which is across the Tagus River from Lisbon, he said.
"One of the parts hit a car and the roof of a building," he added. Residents also handed over metal strips to the police.
SIC television network said the plane was owned by Angolan airline TAAG but this was not officially confirmed.
However a spokesperson for ANA, the company managing Portuguese airports, told AFP "a Boeing 777 of the TAAG company made an emergency landing after turning around because of technical problems".
The wide-body plane, the world's largest twin-engine jet, links Lisbon with the Angolan capital Luanda. It had taken off from Lisbon at 11:11 GMT, ANA said.
The plane landed without further incidents but ANA spokesperson Rui Oliveira said the emergency landing would be investigated as is normal practice.
