ANZEIGE
Das waren die Ziele im Nordirland-Protokoll, das die Briten unterschrieben hatten und die sie nun aber nicht mehr wollen:
What are the main objectives?
Both the EU and the UK have acknowledged the unique circumstances on the island of Ireland. In the protocol, the parties have specifically recognised the need to:
- avoid a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland and protect the 1998 Good Friday (Belfast) agreement, which aims to promote cross-community exchanges and ensure the absence of physical borders between Northern Ireland and Ireland
- ensure the integrity of the EU single market for goods
The Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland explained
The protocol is a binding part of the EU-UK withdrawal agreement. It recognises the special circumstances on the island of Ireland and was negotiated, signed and ratified by the United Kingdom and the European Union. It has applied since 1 January 2021.
